Chapter Thirteen

I had never seen anything as amazing as the observatory I spent my days in between chores, absorbing For the Love of Stars: A Study of the Cosmos. By then, I must have read it cover to cover at least four times and gushed about its brilliance to Brontes endlessly, often bursting into his study next door to talk to him about something new I’d spotted in the text. I could tell he wasn’t as deeply interested in the subject as I was, but he said my enthusiasm made him happy.

To be honest, though Fannar and I spent hours pretending to be playing with them, I was completely clueless as to how to use the orrery and telescopes that had been so enthralling in my textbooks. While it was daunting at first, I eagerly learned everything I could about the equipment. When I finally succeeded in tracking down the stars and constellations with my telescopes, I became absolutely giddy.

My observatory became my own world of refuge, where time seemed to stand still with its sheen of shining brass. But in reality, I kept losing track of time in between enjoying Brontes’ company or studying the stars, including the night I had snuck in after dinner clean up. I didn’t know how long I’d been there when I heard a double knock on the door to Brontes’ study, followed by his head peeking in.

“Gwyneira, it’s getting late,” he said. “You need to get back to the servants’ quarters, or they’ll start worrying about you.”

“Fine,” I sighed as I pulled my face away from one of the telescopes.

He laughed and walked over to me, touching my elbow gently. “You can come back tomorrow!”

“I know, but I only get a few hours a night to see the stars—and it’s so beautiful tonight!”

He looked up through the large glass window. I had already turned off the lights inside the observatory. The night was clear, and the stars were shining mightily from above, breaking the eternal darkness with their soft glow.

“It is,” he agreed in awe.

“And you can see so many constellations! It is a picture-perfect sky!”

“Which ones can we see tonight?” He smiled at my joy.

“Come, sit with me!” I grabbed his large hand and pulled him toward the plush rug. “I’ll show you!”

Brontes chuckled. “Fine, but then you need to go. We don’t want anyone to find out about your secret storage room.”

“It won’t take long. I promise!”

We sat down on the rug together, facing the window, and I pointed out stars. “Do you see those three stars that form a triangle? Right there?”

“Oh, yes,” Brontes said. “Is that Thasulla?”

“Yes! Xodall is her head, and Axeyar and Naneas are her shoulders.”

“And,” Brontes said slowly, as if accessing a distant memory, “Jhadea and Azphion below them form her body, right?”

“Yes! That’s Qotlotl and Hadros, which form her legs.”

Brontes frowned a little. “Where’re her arms? I don’t see them.”

“She’s holding them up.” I held both my arms up to demonstrate. “Like this!”

As I did,
